CP42 Gas Safety Inspections for Commercial Kitchens

A CP42 is the gas safety certificate for a commercial kitchen. It records an inspection of your gas appliances, pipework, ventilation and gas interlock by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We carry out CP42 inspections for kitchens across Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire and west London.

What is a CP42 certificate?

A CP42 is the record of a gas safety inspection in a commercial catering kitchen. The name comes from the CP42 form, which engineers commonly use to record the checks.

The inspection covers the whole catering environment, not just the appliances: the gas supply and isolation, the pipework, the extraction and ventilation, and the interlock between the ventilation and the gas supply. Then each gas appliance is checked in turn.

It is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is qualified for commercial catering work, and you receive a digital certificate by email recording what was checked.

What does a CP42 inspection check?

The catering environment first, then each gas appliance. That includes:

  • The gas supply, isolation valves and emergency shut-off.
  • A tightness test on the installation pipework, to check for gas leaks.
  • The extraction and ventilation, including air testing with the appliances and ventilation running.
  • The interlock that stops the gas if the ventilation fails.
  • Flues, where appliances have them.
  • Each gas appliance: operating pressure, ignition, controls and flame failure devices.

Gas appliances we inspect

  • Gas ranges, ovens and hobs
  • Gas combination ovens
  • Gas fryers
  • Gas grills, griddles and salamanders
  • Other gas cookline appliances

A CP42 is a safety check, not a service. For regular servicing, see our planned preventative maintenance contracts.

Who needs a CP42?

  • Schools and academies
  • Care homes
  • Hotels
  • Restaurants and pubs
  • Golf clubs
  • Contract caterers

Any business with gas cooking equipment in its kitchen has a legal duty to keep it safe, whatever its size. Schools: see our school kitchen maintenance page.

How does a CP42 inspection work?

From booking to certificate, in four steps.

  1. Book. Call 01252 214067 or send an enquiry, and we arrange a visit that fits around your service.
  2. Inspect. The engineer checks the gas supply, pipework, ventilation, interlock and flues, then tests each gas appliance.
  3. Certify. We email your CP42 certificate as soon as the job is complete, recording what was checked and anything that needs attention.
  4. Put right. If anything fails, we explain why. If the parts are on our van, we can repair it on the same visit. If not, we quote for the work.

What happens if an appliance fails?

An unsafe appliance is dealt with under the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure, so that it cannot be used by mistake.

  • Immediately Dangerous: the appliance is disconnected, with your permission, because it is a danger to life or property if left in use.
  • At Risk: the appliance is turned off, with your permission, because a fault has been found that could be a danger.
  • Either way, it is labelled Danger Do Not Use and you receive a written warning notice explaining the fault.

We repair all types and brands of catering equipment, so we can tell you what needs doing. If we can repair it with the parts on our van, we can do it on the same visit. If it needs further work, we send you a quote to put it right.

CP42 questions

Is a CP42 a legal requirement?

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require every employer to ensure that any gas appliance, installation pipework or flue at a place of work under their control is maintained in a safe condition. The law does not name the CP42 form, but a CP42 is the usual way to show that your kitchen’s gas installation has been checked. An environmental health officer inspecting your kitchen is likely to ask for evidence of that maintenance.

How often do I need a CP42 inspection?

Every 12 months. Gas Safe Register advises that the gas equipment and the extraction and ventilation in a commercial kitchen are checked for safe operation on an annual basis. It is also worth having the kitchen checked when new gas appliances are installed, or when the ventilation or interlock is changed.

Who is allowed to carry out a CP42?

Only a Gas Safe registered engineer who is qualified for commercial catering work. Not every gas engineer is. Each engineer’s Gas Safe ID card shows the types of gas work they are registered for, and you can check an engineer on the Gas Safe Register website or by calling Gas Safe Register on 0800 408 5500. Our Gas Safe ID cards cover commercial catering (CCCN1 and COMCAT 1, 2, 3 and 5), LPG, non-domestic testing and purging up to 1 m³ of natural gas, and first fix pipework for natural gas and LPG.

How long does a CP42 inspection take?

It depends on how many gas appliances your kitchen has, and part of the test needs the appliances and the extraction running together. As a guide, a kitchen with five gas appliances takes around one to two hours.

What happens if my kitchen fails?

Any unsafe appliance is turned off or disconnected, with your permission, and labelled so that nobody uses it by mistake. You receive a written warning notice explaining the fault. If we can repair it with the parts on our van, we can do it on the same visit. If it needs further work, we send you a quote.

Do you check the gas interlock?

Yes. The inspection checks the interlock between your ventilation and the gas supply, which stops the gas if the extraction is not running. New and updated ventilation systems in commercial kitchens are required to be interlocked with the gas supply.
